What Does Sunroof Repair Cost?
Common Sunroof Problems

Why Sunroofs Stop Working

When a sunroof won't open or close, or shows an error, it's usually one of these four causes. Most are fixable without replacing the whole sunroof.

01

Lost Calibration

After a weak battery or a power interruption, the car's computer can forget where the glass sits when it's open or closed.

02

Track Blockages

Dirt, leaves or dried-out grease make the mechanism bind, which can trigger the anti-trap safety feature and stop the glass.

03

Blown Fuses

Losing electrical power means the motor can't respond when you press the switch.

04

Worn Motor or Switch

Mechanical wear or a failing electrical part keeps the glass panel from moving.

Leak Signs People Miss

A sunroof leak doesn't always drip where you can see it. Water can run down drain tubes or pillars and soak the carpet and padding underneath, and by the time you notice, the damage can be serious. Sunroofs aren't guaranteed to leak, but when one does, the usual cause is a clogged drain or worn seal, and catching it early keeps the repair small.

  • Damp carpet or water on the floorboard
  • A musty or sour smell inside the car
  • The car always feels humid, or windows fog up when parked
  • Stains or sagging on the headliner

Please don't use roof sealant on a car. Household or RV roof sealants can clog drains and seal the glass to the frame, which makes a proper repair harder and more expensive.

How Much Does Sunroof Repair Cost?

Sunroof repair cost in Raleigh, Kernersville and Fletcher depends on what's actually wrong, which is why we diagnose first instead of guessing. Here's how common repairs usually compare, on a scale of 1 to 5.

1/5

Error Light, Reset or Blown Fuse

Often a reset, re-sync or a blown fuse. Some are fixed in about an hour of labor.

1/5

Leak From Clogged Drains

Clearing and water-testing the drain tubes. Usually the most affordable way to stop a leak.

2/5

Leak From Worn Seals

New seals plus more labor to fit them properly.

3/5

Won't Open or Close

Usually a switch or motor. Parts plus labor, depending on which one failed.

3/5

Cracked or Shattered Glass

A new glass panel plus cleanup. Panoramic roofs run higher (4/5), and refurbished glass can save you money.

4/5

Off Track or Broken Rails

Rails, guides and cables often mean lowering the headliner. If the whole unit has to be replaced, it's a 5/5.

How Our Pricing Works

We charge one hour of labor to diagnose the problem, credited toward the repair when we do the work. Then we walk you through it and give you a detailed quote that covers everything. No surprises, and you decide.

1/5 = usually the lowest cost · 5/5 = usually the highest. Every car is different, so we always quote after diagnosing.

Auto Glass Chains

Great for windshields and side windows, but many don't touch sunroofs. Safelite, for example, says it doesn't repair car sunroofs.

The Dealership

Factory parts and training, but often the most expensive route, and sometimes quick to quote a whole new assembly.

General Mechanic

Great for lots of repairs, but sunroofs are a specialty. Many mechanics send sunroof work out, and some send it to us.

Cost, Insurance & Warranty

5 questions

How much does it typically cost to fix a sunroof?

It depends on what's wrong. A reset, blown fuse or clogged drain costs far less than a new motor, track or glass panel. We charge one hour of labor to diagnose the problem, then give you a detailed quote that covers everything, so there are no surprises. The diagnosis is credited toward the repair when we do the work, and you decide before anything starts.

Is it worth fixing a sunroof?

Usually, yes. Many problems come down to one worn part, a clogged drain or lost calibration, not a whole new sunroof. Leaving a leak alone can ruin carpet, padding and headliners and lead to mold, which costs far more than the original fix.

Does car insurance cover sunroof repair?

Broken sunroof glass is often covered, depending on your policy. You file the claim, handle the paperwork and get it approved with your insurance company, and we'll give you a detailed quote to submit. Once it's approved, we do the work, you pay us directly, and your insurance reimburses you. The same goes for factory warranties, extended warranties and recalls.

Do your sunroof repairs come with a warranty?

Yes. Every repair comes with a warranty, and the length depends on the repair. Ask about your specific repair on our Contact Us form.

Will you install parts I already bought?

It depends on the vehicle and where the part came from. Fill out our Contact Us form with the details and we'll let you know.

Common Problems & Leaks

7 questions

What are common sunroof problems?

The most common are leaks from clogged drains or worn seals, glass stuck open or in tilt, error messages after lost calibration, blown fuses, worn motors or switches, glass knocked off track, and cracked or shattered glass.

Why is my sunroof leaking?

The most common cause is clogged drain tubes. Sunroofs are designed to let some water into a channel around the glass that drains out through tubes; when a tube clogs, water overflows into the car. Worn seals and a misaligned panel are next. Sometimes the water isn't coming from the sunroof at all, so we test to find the real source.

Do all sunroofs eventually leak?

No. A sunroof isn't guaranteed to leak. Leaks usually happen when drains clog with dirt and debris or seals wear with age, and both are fixable. If you've had one leak, it doesn't mean your next sunroof will.

What is the typical lifespan of a car sunroof?

With clear drains and clean, lubricated tracks, many sunroofs last as long as the car. Seals, drains, motors and cables are the parts that wear, and each can be repaired on its own.

My sunroof is stuck open. What should I do?

Don't force the glass. Cover the opening if rain is coming, and for same-day emergencies, call your local shop Monday through Friday at (888) 220-8677.

Can I drive with a shattered sunroof?

It isn't a good idea for long. Loose glass can keep falling, and rain will get in and damage the interior. Cover the opening and have the glass replaced as soon as you can.

Can I repair a sunroof myself?

We don't recommend it. Forcing stuck glass, using household or roof sealants, or taking the mechanism apart without the right tools often turns a small repair into an expensive one. An evaluation finds the real problem first.

Our Repairs

5 questions

Do you repair Mercedes, BMW and Ford F-150 sunroofs?

Yes. We repair sunroofs, moonroofs and panoramic roofs on all makes and models, from Mercedes-Benz and BMW to Ford F-150 and Super Duty trucks, and we perform authorized repair work for many dealerships throughout North Carolina.

Can a panoramic sunroof be repaired?

Yes. We repair panoramic roofs, including leaks, stuck or off-track glass, sunshades, and cracked or shattered panels, including the fixed rear glass on trucks like the Ford F-150.

Do you repair aftermarket sunroofs installed by another shop?

Yes. We repair aftermarket sunroofs no matter who installed them, including leaks, motors and glass.

How long does sunroof repair take?

Some fixes take as little as one hour of labor, and many repairs, including glass replacements, are finished in one working day. Repairs that need parts ordered take longer. We'll give you a timeline with your quote.

Is a sunroof the same as a moonroof?

Originally a sunroof was a solid, body-colored panel and a moonroof was glass. Today most cars have glass roofs and the two names are used interchangeably. We repair both, along with panoramic roofs.

Choosing a Shop & Locations

4 questions

Where can I take my car for sunroof repair?

A sunroof specialist is usually your best bet. Many auto glass chains don't work on sunroofs, dealerships tend to be the most expensive option, and many general mechanics refer sunroof work out. We repair sunroofs on all makes and models at our Raleigh, Kernersville and Fletcher shops.

Does Safelite fix sunroofs?

Safelite says it doesn't repair car sunroofs; it focuses on windshields and other auto glass. We do. We replace sunroof and moonroof glass, including fixed panoramic panels, and repair the mechanism around it.

Do you offer mobile sunroof repair?

No. All repairs are done in our Raleigh, Kernersville and Fletcher shops, where we have the tools and parts to do the job right. For a same-day emergency, like a sunroof stuck open, call your local shop Monday through Friday.

Where can I find sunroof repair near me?

We have three North Carolina locations: Kernersville (near Winston-Salem and Greensboro), Raleigh (near Durham and Cary) and Fletcher (near Asheville). All three are open Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Call (888) 220-8677 or fill out our Contact Us form to schedule.
